This picture got a few likes.  There is an interesting story behind this nice lunch.  Me and a friend met a Filipino grocery store.  After we were done at the store, he said let’s stop and say hello to Erik who lives not far from the store.  We did and Erik made us Manhattan cocktails and served us the crabs for lunch.  Not a bad deal for two uninvited guests. We also ate the jeproks and bbq that my friend bought at the store that he was supposed to bring home to his wife.

  2. Travel is the big one.  I travelled a lot as you can tell from the photos I shared in My Travel Photos thread.  I’ve had the travel bug since I was young.  Right after graduating from college, I spent 60 days backpacking solo around Europe.  2020 was a tough year.  We had several travel plans that had to be cancelled.  We spent January and February in Manila.  Since we had a cruise scheduled for March, we had to return to the US.  Right after we got back to the US, the cruise line decided to cancel our cruise.  So, we just rescheduled it for October.   We also had a trip to visit Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco in May.  Hotels and airfare were already booked.  That too was cancelled.  We had a trip to Cartagena, Colombia scheduled for September and we decided to cancel that because Colombia had a very high covid rate.  The cruise we rescheduled for October was also cancelled by the cruise line.  After the cruise, we were going to head to Manila to spend a few weeks and we ended up postponing this until who knows when.  Right now, we are still waiting for the Philippines to ease the travel restrictions. As of today, the rule says we have to do a minimum of 14 days quarantine that’s if we test negative.  We have become so claustrophobic at home that we decided to do just a road trip and drive down to a Florida beach.  We picked a relatively unknown but beautiful place that I have been to before where covid rates are fairly low.  We are going to Navarre Beach next week.  A small consolation price for all the travel that got cancelled.  I can’t wait for this stupid pandemic to be over so we can get back to traveling again.

  3. This happened a couple of years ago.  My wife and I were trying to get from BGC to UP TechnoHub in QC to meet some of my high school friends for a small reunion dinner.  We agreed to meet at 6pm.  We tried getting a taxi or Grab but didn't have any luck.  One of the taxi drivers suggested we take the MRT instead, get off at Trinoma and take a taxi from there to our destination.   We were told many times before to watch out for pickpockets when taking the MRT specially during rush hours so were very careful.  We took a taxi to the Ayala station and headed to QC.  As you can imagine, the MRT was jam packed since it was rush hour.   We had to stand up squeezed like sardines.  By the way, my wife is a blond American and I am a very tall 6'1 Filipino.  We looked like we were out of place and a perfect target for pickpockets.  When the train arrived in Cubao, there was a mad dash to get out.   At this point, I felt someone bump the right back pocket of my pants where I usually put my cell phone.  I immediately thought that a pick pocket got my phone.  So I quickly grabbed the hand of the guy that bumped me.  I felt a cell phone in his hand.  He was trying to pull away as I was trying to open the palm of his hands to take back my phone. Then, I saw that the phone he was holding was black.  I had a white cell phone.  I let go and the guy looked really scared and dashed out of the train.  I checked my pockets again and found out that my phone was in my left back pocket.  The guy probably thought I was a cell phone snatcher with an American blond girl as an accomplice.   Everyone around us were laughing when they heard what I had transpired.  The irony of this is that by being so afraid of being victimized, I ended becoming the perpetrator.

    Dear Papa.

Thank you for raising me even if you’re not my biological father.

I don’t know if you’d be shocked in knowing that i’m not yours but you certainly made a huge impact in my life. Despite of Mama’s drama overtures and complicit accusations, you’ve decided to leave her and you took me with you.

You died 20 years ago.  I was on my own, your voice resonated in my head - and it made me through tough times. Little did i learned that secrets were unfolding right before me.

I received a card a few years ago that i have to come home and attend a funeral. It was at a big funeral place on Mindanao Avenue where the rich people have theirs. The person who died was an old family friend who i’ve  worked  for when i was a teen.

Remember him, Papa? he told Grandma that i should work during the summer break? i was very keen of having 1200 pesos a month, not bad for a kid who doesn’t know much about Excel but the work ethic is good and learned to value currency and savings.  Later on my 18 birthday and on my 1st semester in college - he bought me a present - it was a small expensive watch.

I declined the gift and was confused about his intentions and he understood my hesitation. He put the watch in his pocket and then i could hardly remember afterwards.

As i stepped out of the car, in front of the grand place. The whole building was well lighted and the smell of burning incense was as rancid as the Pasig river made me dizzy. I got the room number and i entered the door and as I stepped in, all the people who i’ve worked with in my teen years hugged me and shaked my hand.

There were strange people who took my hand and made me sit with them. They asked about my flight and i said it was long. How’s my life working for the ‘brewery’ and i said good. The strange people were his 3 sons - all Doctors. First time i’ve seen his boys.

” We’ve decided to return this to you” one of them exclaimed and handed the watch.

” I didn’t know he kept it afterall these years!, it must be 20 years since i’ve seen this!” i gasped and smiled as i held it in my hand.

” We never expect you’d turn down the rolex but Dad always reminded us about that moment you turned it down”.

” we’re actually wondering why you did, Kat..”.

“ I was too young to have an extravagant gift.” i replied.

” But did you look at the back of it?”.

    - No.

Then i looked at the back and there were words engraved.

My eyes got big and about to swallow a huge lump of spit.

    Then i read :

’ to my only daughter, I love you always, Dad’.

Great story.  Thanks for sharing it.

i like that your messages are encrypted and that it doesn't collect a lot of user data, what i don't like is that it sends a notification to all of the people who have your number saved that has telegram that you've made an account. smh.

I have not used telegram.  Is this the one called telegram messenger in the app store?  There is also one called Telegram Group and Channel DB.  If it similar to Viber, why would you switch to Telegram?
